Target Participants

This program targets SMEs from all areas of Japan with cutting-edge technologies and excellent ideas, and provides them with necessary human networks and knowledge required for global expansion. The program aims to create global businesses that contribute to solving international issues by introducing business leaders to the world’s leading innovation ecosystems such as Silicon Valley in the United States.

Application qualifications

Applicants must fulfill all of the following criteria.
  • 1.Applicants must be either a manager, a representative or a person in charge of global expansion with decisive power in SMEs which plans to extend their business worldwide.
  • 2.In principle, applicants’ business must possess technology, a product, or service (including prototypes) suitable for global expansion.
  • 3.Applicants’ business must have their business base in Japan.
  • 4.4. Applicants must be capable of receivinge mentoring and having business meetings in English. If program participant cannot fulfill this requirement by him/herself, the applicant is allowed to bring along an extra person for English correspondence. However, any costs related to the extra person are to be fully covered by the applicant.
  • 5.Applicants’ business must be well structured to accommodate global expansion.
  • 6.Applicants must be able to attend all scheduled events such as screening interview, pre-program orientation, and post-program briefer program.
  • 7.Applicant must fulfill all of the following conditions:
    • Applicant nor his/her business mustn’t be undergoing legal charges.
    • Applicant nor representatives of his/her business mustn’t be connected to any violent or morally suspicious organizations and it mustn’t be funded nor supported by these organizations.
    • Application must not be related to morally suspicious businesses.
    • The applicant’s business must not be judged as inappropriate in terms of the regulation of the Article 2 of the Law Concerning Restriction of Businesses (Act No. 121 of 1951).

Overview

“HIYAKU Next Enterprise” program is a part of “Silicon Valley-Japan Bridge Project", sublet by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). This program targets SMEs from all over Japan with cutting-edge technologies and excellent ideas, and provides them with necessary human networks and knowledge required for global expansion.

Through this “HIYAKU Next Enterprise” program*, the participants will learn systems of venture companies’ environment and how to apply those to their ecosystems. The knowledge and networks established with overseas businesses will help Japanese companies broaden their business internationally.

* “Silicon Valley-Japan Bridge Project" was announced by Prime minister Abe on April 30, 2015 during his visit to Silicon Valley. This project is intended to bridge Japanese start-up ecosystem, start-ups and entrepreneurs to those in Silicon Valley. Through these programs connecting entrepreneurs and leaders from enterprises in Japan to those in Silicon Valley, METI aims to continuously create innovations that are globally influential.

Travel expenses and expenses spent on site (transportation expenses, accommodation expenses etc) are responsibility of the selected company

        (A – group) February 11th to February 15th , 2019
        (B – group) February 25th to March 1st , 2019
    Post-program Reporting Session: 20th of March, 2019 – venue TBD
  • 2.Bengaluru course:
    Application period: September 28th 2018/9/28 (Fri.) – November 4th (Sun.), 2018
    Selection results: End of November, 2018
    Pre-program orientation: Beginning of December,2018
    Program period: 4nd February (Mon.) 2018/2/4 (Mon) – 7th February (Thu.), 2018/2/7
    Post-program Reporting Session: 20th of March, 2019 – venue TBD

Selection process

Screening of applications is based on the evaluation criteria listed below. A committee of external experts will conduct the screening. Names of successful applicants will be announced both on this home page and the home page of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. A notification of results will be also sent to applicants.
※For enterprises selected for J-Startup will be given some preferential treatment during the appraisal process.
Evaluation criteria
  • Feasibility, effect and long-term potential of your global expansion plan.
  • The growth potential and future prospects of the applicant and applicant’s business.
  • The applicant’s enthusiasm and passion towards his/her business and it’s global expansion.
